Treating Parkinson's Disease
"Did you hear that an Italian doctor actually cures Parkinson's with two high dosage injections of L-Glutathione? Would like to hear something about it from you." This question was included in an e-mail that I discussed last week in an e-Alert titled "One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (10/30/02). Some digging around on the Internet revealed that L-Glutathione injections apparently offer a few days of relief, but fall far short of being a cure. And because I wasn't able to find out more about L-G, I asked for responses from anyone who might have additional information, and received this e-mail from an HSI member named Dr. P.: "There is a neurologist named Perlmutter and I believe he is in Naples, Florida, and he does the glutathione injections for Parkinsonism. I referred a patient to him and he got good relief temporarily. He also gave him colchicine, and I believe that was for pain, which he felt was quite helpful. I know that Terry Haws, M.D., in Arlington Heights, IL, will also give glutathione. It was something like 90 to 115 dollars per dose and not covered by insurance." And another e-mail from an HSI member named T.T. offered this information on two other Parkinson's treatments: "My father-in-law developed Parkinson's a few years ago and I did some research in potential remedies. I eventually found 2 possibilities: 1. Deprenyl - a drug manufactured overseas and not normally available in the U.S. although it can be purchased for personal use through the mail. 2. GH3 - an anti-aging drug discovered in Romania by Dr. Ana Aslan. Both work by inhibiting Mono Amine Oxidase in the brain (MAO inhibitors). Even those with severe symptoms can return to nearly normal function when taking either of these. There were also books written about both of these drugs and they may still be available."
