Morning Coffee

I came across an article that might prompt teachers in Italy to go on strike.

In the latest report from the endless debate over the pros and cons of coffee drinking, Dr. Chiara Trombetti - a dietician with the Humanitas Gavazzeni Institute in Bergamo, Italy - told BBC News that not only is coffee good for you, but the stronger it is, the better.

Dr. Trombettii admits that she doesn't enjoy the typically strong espresso that's so popular in her country. Nevertheless, she cites a list of health benefits that studies have associated with coffee consumption, including:

  • Promotes circulation within the heart
  • Contains antioxidants
  • May help prevent liver cirrhosis and gallstones
  • May help reduce the risk of asthma attacks

Dr. Trombetti notes that pregnant women and patients with stomach ulcers or heart problems should avoid coffee. But she believes that a cup of "milky coffee" in the morning might be the perfect stimulation needed to help young students from becoming drowsy.

This suggestion must send a chill up the spine of many elementary school teachers. Just what every third-grader needs: a shot of espresso to send them blasting off into the day!
