THIS WEEK IN THE HSI HEALTHIER TALK COMMUNITY

Late last summer, a stranger stopped by Arlie Stutzman's farm in northeast Ohio to purchase a container of raw, unpasteurized milk.

It was a sting. The stranger was an agent from the Department of Agriculture in Ohio where selling raw milk is illegal. Stutzman's license was revoked, but he's still fighting the decision, which he says violates his religious practice of sharing his dairy products. Mr. Stutzman is Amish.

An HSI member named Orangemetal posted an Associated Press article about Mr. Stutzman on a Healthier Talk forum thread titled "RAW MILK and the Weston A. Price Foundation in the news." The article, published last week, notes that the foundation is dedicated to "restoring nutrient-dense foods to people's diets" and supports the consumption of raw milk. Orangemetal's note: "I never thought the mainstream news would ever write/talk about real milk."

Here's how other HSI members responded to Orangemetal and the AP article.

WillowS: "Too bad Ohio doesn't have a law similar to Pennsylvania's which does allow raw milk sales from the farm. They get a certificate from the agricultural dept and are inspected every two weeks."

Howard: "We have to go to the next state (Wisconsin) and bring our own containers, but we can buy it."

Pinky: "Sale of raw milk is illegal in Ky. too, but I'll keep getting mine whenever I can, from my farm family. I've had no problem w/it for almost 2 yrs now. I sure do love that rich cream in my coffee each AM."

Ralph: "So why aren't all those who consume raw milk in the states that allow it infected and / or dead from all those dangerous bacteria?"

Clive: "This is an excellent foundation. Many articles have links and you can even read some in other languages!"

HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., has often cited articles by Mary Enig, Ph.D., and Sally Fallon of the Weston A. Price foundation. You can read more about the foundation and the benefits of raw milk in the e-Alert "Gut Feeling" (1/31/05).

* Depression: Natural for depression

* Dental: Receding gums
