It sounds a little like science fiction. Say you have chronic back pain. No problem. You just wrap your back in a special fabric and the pain is gradually relieved. Feeling better, you return to your job repairing robots on the moon. Believe it or not, the part about the fabric is not fiction. After I sent you the e-Alert "Panoramic View" (7/5/07), which addressed the unique problem of phantom pain associated with an amputated limb, one of my colleagues here at HSI reminded me of Farabloc, a fabric that actually relieves pain associated with phantom pain, as well as arthritis, fibromyalgia, back aches, and even migraine headaches. In the May 1998 issue of the HSI Members Alert we told you about an FDA ban on Farabloc. More than six years later, in the November 2004 Members Alert, we reported that the ban had been lifted when the FDA issued a registration number allowing Farabloc to be sold in the U.S. Farabloc was developed by a German scientist named Frieder Kempe in the late 1960s. In creating this unique fabric, Kempe adapted the technology of the Faraday Cage, which is a physical shield that blocks electrical fields. The walls of a Faraday Cage are made of specially designed metal strands arranged in a grid that blocks high level electromagnetic frequencies and radiation. Rooms that contain MRI equipment are protected by Faraday Cage technology. After much trial and error, Kempe developed a fabric that blocked electrical fields. His first test subject was his father, a WW II vet who had lost a limb in combat and suffered phantom limb pain during climate and other environmental changes. When his father reported complete relief from phantom limb pain, Kempe went on to refine his fabric. The result is Farabloc, a mesh of microthin threads of stainless steel fibers woven with nylon. It's a durable lightweight fabric that looks and feels like linen.
