Read those labels carefully!

You've got to be very alert these days when reading the nutrition panels on processed foods.

For instance…

I love Wegman's. For those of you who don't live near one, Wegman's is a grocery chain that features HUGE stores with tons of fresh produce, delicatessens, large cheese departments, bakeries, cookware shops, patisseries, cafés, flower shops, excellent seafood sections, and some stores even have sushi bars.

So…the other day I'm at my local Wegman's. I'm looking for bread. It probably won't surprise you to learn that I try to eat healthy when I can, and I check labels pretty carefully. So I come across a label that says what's "really" in the bread, and then something like "What we have to tell you that's in it because of government standards." And scanning the list I find this: "corn syrup (high fructose conversion)."

Conversion? Converted to WHAT? This looks like a sneaky way to avoid using the phrase "high fructose corn syrup," and to make it seem as if it's not really what it really is.

Like I say, I love Wegman's, but I'm a little disappointed in this sleight of hand. Read those labels carefully!
